Read the enemy. Forge your dice. Then strike.

Cast the Bones is a turn-based dice roguelite in chunky pixel art. Put an item on every face of your dice, throw them onto the battlefield, and your swords, spells and shields fire in dice order. Every monster shows its next move before you roll, so each throw is a small puzzle: hit hard now, or raise a shield first?

Build your dice, face by face

  • An item on each face, 1 to 6: swords that hit the shield first, magic that slips past it, shields, heals, gold, Poison and Burn.
  • 44 items to unlock, upgrade at the blacksmith and sell back.
  • Dice combinations (Double, Triple, Straight, Full, Perfect) multiply everything that fires.
  • Reroll a die, drink a potion, call on your champion's ability. Then strike.

Read the enemy

  • 29 monsters, each with its own trick: one rolls for power, one steals your gold, one seals a die every 4th round.
  • Every move is shown before you roll. Brace for the big hit, break the guard, race the countdown.
  • Each one opens the fight with a famous line, bent to fit.

Endless stages, seven regions, wild weather

  • The stages never end, and every 10 take you to a new region: Sheep Meadow, Pine Forest, Rocky Coast, Bone Marsh and more.
  • Thunderstorm, Sandstorm, Scorching Heat, Snowfall and Rising Tide change the rules for both sides.

Grow stronger every run

  • 5 champions, each with an ability of their own.
  • 35 consumables and 20 late-game artefacts.
  • Skill Points from every run buy upgrades that last: more dice, more rerolls, more HP.
  • Unlock every item in the Collection and chase your best stage in the Records.

How to play

  • Mouse or touch only, no keyboard needed. A guided tutorial plays your first run with you.
  • In English and Brazilian Portuguese (it follows your browser; Settings changes it).
  • Your progress and your run are saved in your browser, between battles.

Hoodini opening with "Death is nothing to us. To me, it's a hobby" got a real laugh out of me. Rolled a double on my first throw and that little x1.1 popping up under the dice felt great.

Enemies showing their next move before the roll turns every dice throw into a tiny puzzle. Not bad, dev. I'm only a little jealous.
